From Riffelberg the Swiss Topwalk no. 23 zigzags down beside the Riffelberg-Express gondola and then leads through the larches to the Riffelalp Resort. Zermatt Tourism lists it as a mountain hiking trail of grade T2. On the last stretch to Riffelalp station it runs beside the tracks of the Riffelalptram. From the station the Gornergrat Railway runs down to Zermatt.
On 31 October 2026 Nicolas and his friend Julian come down from Gornergrat in the afternoon, past the frozen Riffelsee and over Riffelberg. The trail is already closed. On the shady slopes there is some snow, frozen and very slippery. On one side of the path the ground drops away steeply, and a few times it gets dangerous.
On the way the two of them photograph the Matterhorn behind the larches, with the low sun to its left. Shortly before four they reach Riffelalp, and the sun is already setting.
