The Gornergrat Railway has run from Zermatt up to Gornergrat since 20 August 1898, as the first electric rack railway in Switzerland. The ride takes 33 minutes, and the top station lies at 3089 metres. The viewing platform is above the station, behind the Kulmhotel, which is considered the highest hotel in the Swiss Alps. According to the Gornergrat Railway, astronomers carried out research in the two domes on its towers from 1967 to 2010.

According to the Gornergrat Railway, 29 four-thousanders can be seen from here. To the south-east stand Monte Rosa with the Dufourspitze, at 4634 metres the highest summit in Switzerland, and the Liskamm. Below lies the Gorner Glacier, after the Great Aletsch Glacier the second largest glacier in Switzerland. According to Glacier Monitoring in Switzerland (GLAMOS), its tongue has retreated by a good three kilometres since measurements began in 1882.

On 31 October 2026 Nicolas and his friend Julian ride up in the morning. The sky is cloudless, and MeteoSwiss measures as much sun on Gornergrat as is possible at all, but barely above zero degrees around midday. There is already snow on the ridge. From Gornergrat the two of them walk on to the Riffelsee.
