We have breakfast in glorious sunshine, looking out at the mountains and the sea. The weather is so good that we don’t linger over the view but get ready for a hike straight away. On the way we grab a coffee in Ramberg and, full of energy, drive to the car park at Fredvang. Here we start our hike up Ryten and on to Kvalvika Beach. Ryten is 543 metres above sea level. Some sections are once again typical Norwegian hiking trails, meaning steep boulders where you have to find your own way. But most of the time we can follow a normal trail. On the way up we look out over the beach at Fredvang and the surrounding mountains.
When we finally reach the top of Ryten after two to three hours, we are rewarded with a breathtaking view of Kvalvika Beach and all the mountains around us. We even venture out onto an overhanging rock to take photos. We can now officially say we have conquered Ryten.
From there we head downhill to Kvalvika Beach. This white sandy beach with its clear, light blue water can only be reached on foot. If it were a bit warmer, you could easily think we were on a beach holiday somewhere in the south.
But it is getting a bit late and we still have quite a way to go. Instead of going back over Ryten, we take the ‘direct’ route, with only 200 metres of ascent and lots of scrambling sections. After the hike we still have to walk for an hour along the road back to the car park. It is already evening and we are pretty tired after such a long hike. Back at our accommodation, the first thing we do is look after our feet. We cook something simple, rice with stroganoff sauce, and then get ready for the northern lights. Since the weather is staying so nice, a starry sky is forecast for the night as well. And indeed, there is little time to rest: We drive to Skagsanden Beach, park at the cemetery and walk to the beach, where we can see and photograph northern lights over the open sea, over the mountains and right above us.
Shortly after midnight we drive back to our cabin. There we keep marvelling at the northern lights and photographing them until after 2 am. Tomorrow the alarm won’t go off until 9 o’clock…
