Calm water in front of Stockholm's city centre, the Stadhus with its tower on the left, houses and a pointed church spire on the right

Stockholm Day 2

17,000 steps in the sunshine: Gamla Stan, Södermalm, Monteliusvägen, Skinnarviksberget, lunch at the Stadhus and the island of Skeppsholmen.

In short

Under a cloudless sky we walk from the shopping street to the harbour, through Gamla Stan and on to Södermalm. From Monteliusvägen and Skinnarviksberget we enjoy the view of the city centre. We have lunch right by the sea at the Stadhus, and afterwards on Skeppsholmen we marvel at the artworks by Tinguely and de Saint Phalle.

Today was a wonderfully sunny day. The perfect day to get a sunburn… Who would have thought, in Stockholm?! Not a big deal, it will surely be brown tomorrow. Anyway, we got around a lot today and took 17,000 steps through Stockholm in total. After breakfast at the hotel we walked along the shopping street to the harbour. Then we walked through the old town Gamla Stan to the district of Södermalm. From there we continued west along the island and enjoyed the wonderful view of the city centre from Monteliusvägen. This idyllic path led us on to Skinnarviksberget, a large rock in the sunshine with a view of the sea and Stockholm’s Stadhus.

With hungry stomachs we made our way to the Stadhus, where we had lunch right by the sea under a cloudless sky at 25 degrees. Of course a cinnamon bun for dessert was a must.

After this wonderful and restful break for our feet, we continued to the island of Skeppsholmen, where we marvelled at Tinguely’s and de Saint Phalle’s artworks. Quite exhausted, we went back to our hotel and looked forward to the Indian food that we ordered. Unfortunately, Indian restaurants in Sweden seem to use a different heat scale than Indian restaurants in Switzerland, so in the evening we sweated more than we had in the Stockholm sun.
