Today we take things slowly. Nicolas is fighting off a cold, so we pick up something for it at the pharmacy (which is just a small medicine cabinet in the nearest supermarket). After lunch at our accommodation we drive to the same destination as yesterday afternoon: Riisitunturi National Park. On the way we come across a car accident: There has been a head-on collision on the snow-covered road. Both cars look like write-offs, but fortunately nobody is seriously hurt, and those involved decline our help. We drive on to the Riisitunturi car park considerably more carefully after that. Today it is cloudier and foggier than yesterday, and we see barely anything of the setting sun when we arrive at 3:40 pm. We start the hike immediately and hurry all the way up to the top. We arrive out of breath, but we are treated to an unbelievable spectacle! The sky and snow are tinted pink by the sun setting through the fog. We enjoy the sight, if you can call it enjoying at -25 °C once again… Our eyelashes are frozen, but this time we’ve come prepared for our hands and feet with newly bought heat pads, which give off a lovely warmth. We photograph the entire spectacle, of course, and are beyond glad that we did this hike again today. We then make our leisurely way home, a 45-minute drive. Once home, we naturally have another sauna session before dinner.
In short
Despite Nicolas' cold we attempt the Riisitunturi hike a second time, hurrying up in time for dusk at -25 °C. The reward: Sky and snow turn pink as the sun sets through the fog, a surreal spectacle worth every frozen eyelash.
