Jokkmokk - Kvikkmokk

After a relaxed morning we want to visit Sarek National Park and go hiking. We ask our landlady, who was happy to give us information and was very helpful. She also told us that there is a peaceful moose in Jokkmokk that comes back every year and spends the night in the residents’ gardens. With the help of her tips we decide to drive to Kvikkmokk. According to our landlady, the road there is very beautiful and there are several hiking trails into Sarek National Park that start in Kvikkmokk.

So once again we drove a bit north and, above all, west. The drive turns out to be one big adventure. The way there should actually have taken 1.5 hours, but we were on the road for a full 4 hours. Not because of a bad road, but because there were so many beautiful viewpoints over frozen lakes with views of the mountains. We therefore had to stop often, which delayed our trip quite a bit. We also saw a lot of animals. Annina spotted a moose while we were photographing by the side of the road. We immediately drove in its direction, and when we reached it, it wanted to jump over a fence next to the road and unfortunately got caught in the wire mesh, so that it toppled over. Luckily it managed to free itself and disappear into the vast forest. We also saw reindeer, roe deer, a mountain hare and lots of ptarmigan. For a long stretch we drive only 30 km/h instead of 90 km/h, because we absolutely wanted to spot more moose. Even at 30 km/h that is almost an impossibility, though, since they are so well camouflaged in the dense forest. We have a picnic at a frozen lake, but we can’t stand the cold for long without moving and soon drive on again.

In Kvikkmokk itself we then only have time for a short forest walk along the Kungsleden trail and a visit to the beautiful wooden church.

Nicolas drives all the way to Kvikkmokk and Annina drives all the way back, so we shared out the driving and the looking out for moose nicely. On the way back we drive rather briskly and stop only a few times to take more photos of the beautiful lakes. Back at our cabin, Nicolas does a load of laundry and Annina cooks dinner.
