Nicely rested, we pick up breakfast at Cafe Henry and eat it in the Burggarten right next to the Hofburg. Together with hungry ducks, we have a leisurely breakfast with a view of a small lake. Afterwards we go to the Viennese “Naschmarkt”, a street full of restaurants, souvenir shops and food and clothing stalls with a southern touch. We continue by U-Bahn to Schönbrunn Palace.
We walk through the truly enormous palace garden to the “Gloriette”, a building that was dedicated to Empress Maria Theresa and her eldest son. In the hall with the large windows, which faces the palace park and the palace behind it, the imperial family ate together.
Afterwards we visit the Najadenbrunnen and the Rosarium. Then we take the U-Bahn back to our hotel. From there we walk to the Stephansdom and climb the 343 steps of a spiral staircase that lead up the south tower of the cathedral. Once we reach the top, everything is spinning around us at first. But the view is wonderful and we look down over all of Vienna. We take it in and then go all the way back down. Then we eat Kaiserschmarrn and head to the hotel. There we order cheese spaetzle and vegan goulash with dumplings, plus potato soup and salad.
