Riisitunturi National Park at dusk

Today we take the day slowly. Nicolas is fighting off a cold, so we pick something up against it at the pharmacy (which is just a small medicine cabinet in the nearest supermarket). After lunch at our accommodation we drive to the same destination as yesterday afternoon: Riisitunturi National Park. On the way we come upon a car accident, a head-on collision on the snow-covered road. Both cars looked like write-offs, but fortunately nobody was seriously hurt and those involved declined our help. We drive on to the Riisitunturi car park considerably more carefully after that. Today looks cloudier and foggier than yesterday, and we see barely anything of the setting sun when we arrive at 3:40 pm. We start the hike immediately and hurry all the way up to the top. We arrive out of breath, and are treated to an unbelievable spectacle! The sky and snow are tinted pink by the sun setting through the fog. We soak in the show, as far as -25 °C once again allows anything to be “soaked in”… Our eyelashes are frozen, but this time we’ve come prepared for our hands and feet with newly bought heat pads, which give off a lovely warmth. We photograph the entire spectacle, of course, and are beyond glad that we did this hike again today. We then make our leisurely way back on the 45-minute drive home, where we naturally finish the day with a sauna session before having dinner.
