Out of the glass cabin, into the villa!
After a snowshoe trail through wintry forests we move house: from the glass igloo into a brand-new cabin with a huge window front, fireplace and a sauna right in the bathroom. The strong northern lights forecast for the night sadly fall victim to dense clouds, even the 2 am alarm doesn't help.
We wake up today and the sun is starting to show itself again, hooray, a beautiful sunrise! We start just like yesterday with a great breakfast buffet. Then it’s time to pack our suitcases and check out. We stay in the area a little longer though and grab snowshoes. Snowshoes on our feet, cameras in our hands, we set off on a snowshoe trail leading through beautifully snow-covered forests.
After this lovely outdoor experience we get in the car and drive to Ruka. This small winter sports village lies on the way to our next accommodation. We browse the local shops and have lunch at a Subway with a nice view of snowy trees. Then we drive on to our new accommodation! We follow a heavily snowed-in road and first have to find our little cabin, as the road is brand new and not yet on Google Maps. We find it, and it’s a stunner! Wonderfully spacious and so beautifully situated! It’s a very modern cabin with a huge glass front looking out onto a small forest. It also has a sauna which, as is typical in Finland, is integrated directly into the bathroom. From the bedroom, too, the large window front gives us a direct view of the surrounding trees. There’s a fireplace as well, and all the equipment is brand new and beautifully furnished in Nordic style. Life will certainly be good here for the next few nights!
After the obligatory sauna session we have dinner, a Thai curry. We have high hopes of seeing northern lights tonight, as they’re forecast to be stronger than they’ve been in a long time. We stay up late but eventually have to give up because it’s simply far too cloudy. We can’t see up to the aurora, so we go to bed, but set the alarm for 2 am, when the cloud cover is supposedly going to open up a little. We’re disappointed then too, unfortunately. The clouds are still there and too dense. But in our bed with this beautiful view, we sleep very well regardless.
