Basel - Hamburg

With the global Interrail pass we kick off our big journey north, first stop: Hamburg. After the long train ride we explore the harbour in the middle of a street food festival, the Elbphilharmonie and the Speicherstadt. The evening ends in style: a boat tour through the illuminated harbour and, spontaneously, a laser and drone show with an Aperol Spritz in hand.

We left Basel early on Saturday morning - we’re off to another trip! This time we are travelling with the global Interrail pass - by train. Our first stop is Hamburg, Germany.

After a long train journey which was a bit tedious as we only had a reservation for part of the journey and therefore had to look around a lot for a seat we arrived in Hamburg.

First we take a taxi to the hotel where we check in and leave our luggage. Then we head off into the city, because we want to explore it!

We walk towards the harbour where a lot is going on because today there is a kind of festival in Hamburg harbour with street food and music! So we walk through the festival stands and then decide to continue towards the Elbphilharmonie to explore the beautiful buildings there, also in Hamburg’s Speicherstadt.

We also decided on the spur of the moment to take an evening boat tour, which will show us the city lights as it cruises through the harbour. So we head back towards the harbour in the evening, where we pick up potato puffs (Kartoffelpuffer) and Indian food from the street food stalls. Our boat tour starts at 20:30 and we have a super captain who introduces us to the city of Hamburg and the world of ships in a very funny way.

After the boat tour, we spontaneously find out that there is a laser and drone show in the harbour from 22:30. There is a great spot near the landing pier to watch the show. So we pick a nice spot and get some aperol spritz to round off the evening with this show.
